Percy James Horsley, village chemist, killed on 27th May 1941 when a German bomb fell on his shop (the site is now occupied by the garage in Church Road). He lived at Lower Birchland Lodge, Newick
On 22nd May 1941 there was a German bomb attack over Sussex. It was a warm Thursday in May and German bomber reached England coming in over the Shoreham coast at approximately 4.45 in the afternoon. The bomber dropped its load of bombs over parts of Sussex, including one which hit Newick on Church Road immediately opposite the chemist shop. The huge blast not only damaged the nearby Bannister’s shop and car repair garage, but tragically killed the village chemist, 62 year old Percy Horsley.
He was found dead on the floor of his shop surrounded by broken glass. He lived at Lower Birchland Lodge.
His gravestone in St Mary's churchyard, Newick has the inscription ‘killed by enemy action’.
